Exclusive Economic Zone Industry Group
Mission: To enhance business opportunities for UK industry in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) management, control and exploitation sectors by combining individual company strengths with UK Government support.
What is an EEZ?
An Exclusive Economic Zone is the geographic area extending up to an initial 200 miles from a country's coastline and covers shore infrastructure, ports and harbours, air space, sea bed and the tract of ocean up to the zone's perimeter.
Under recent legislation, all nations signed up to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), have a need to provide management and control systems to ensure the protection of their EEZ and also to help maximise the exploitation of commercial rights within it.
The areas covered by UNCLOS are:
- Safety of Navigation
- Safety of Life at Sea
- Up keep of Law and Order
- Security and Ownership of Assets
- Responsibility for the Environment
